S9 E10: Lead Like Jesus in The 700 Club Asia
For our season finale, we are featuring the interview CBN Asia did to highlight the ministry of Lead Like Jesus in the Philippines. Peter Kairuz interviewed Rick Pickering, President of LLJ, as well as Boris Joaquin, lead for Southeast Asia and Frances Acu, lead for the Philippines. Take a listen to this inspiring conversation.
S9 E9: Why ‘Servant Leadership’ Is What the World Needs Right Now
For servant leaders, “Lead Like Jesus” international president said success is counted sweetest by neither fortune nor fame, but how they made a positive impact in the lives of others.
As far as leadership philosophies go, “servant leadership” remains the best, and it is what the world needs right now, according to Rick Pickering, the current international president of the “Lead Like Jesus” (LLJ) movement, who is visiting the Philippines to spread the word about shaping “The Heart of a Leader.”
Pickering offered some of his leadership insights when he appeared on the most recent episode of “Breakthrough with Boris Joaquin,” which was streamed live last October 31 on the official Facebook pages of The Philippine STAR and CareerGuide.
S9 E8: Carmen’s Best Founder Shares Tips On How To Stay Resilient In Business
Francisco “Paco” Magsaysay, the man behind Carmen’s Best ice cream, said entrepreneurs must be willing to put in the hours, and go the extra mile for their business to succeed.
The long-time businessman shared these thoughts in the Thursday evening (Nov. 16) livestream of “Breakthrough with Boris Joaquin” on the Facebook pages of The Philippine Star and Career Guide. The episode centered on leadership and innovation in times of accelerated growth.
S9 E7: What's Next Coach? An Interview with Chot Reyes
Breakthrough with Boris Joaquin interviews Coach Chot Reyes, former head coach for the Philippine national basketball team. During his leadership, led the team to a historic silver medal finish at the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship and the subsequent appearance at the 2014 FIBA World Cup, the country's first in 36 years.
He also coached the team in the 2023 FIBA World Cup receiving disappointing reactions from Filipino basketball fans.
Listen to the coach as he shares the highs and lows of leadership coaching. And what’s next for him as he steps down as the Gilas Pilipinas coach.
This episode of BREAKTHROUGH with Boris Joaquin entitled, 'What's Next, Coach?' was aired last Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 7PM.
S9 E6: Overcoming the Performance Paradox
Breakthrough with Boris Joaquin invites you to break from Performance Paradox box, that counterintuitive phenomenon that if we focus only on performing, our performance suffers. Discover how to balance learning and performing to bolster personal and team success with this revolutionary guide from a world-renowned expert on growth mindset.
Aired last August 17, Tuesday 8pm on the FB pages of the Philippine Star, CareerGuide and Salt and Light Ventures, Boris Joaquin interviews Eduardo Briceño, a global keynote speaker, facilitator, and program provider who supports organizations in developing cultures of learning and high performance. His TED Talk, How to Get Better at the Things You Care About, and his prior TEDx Talk, The Power of Belief, have been viewed more than nine million times.
In his latest book, Performance Paradox, Edu shares that most successful individuals, teams, and organizations habituate the two zones — the Learning and Performance Zones). To improve or innovate, we can’t spend all our time doing things as best as we know how, trying to minimize mistakes. We have to also engage in the mental state and strategies to go beyond what we know. When we do these together, we’re Learning While Doing.
S9 E5: Couple Goals with Anthony and Maricel Pangilinan
Breakthrough with Boris Joaquin interviews celebrity couple, Anthony Pangilinan and Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan, as they navigate the challenging road to a lifetime of togetherness. Celebrating their 30th anniversary this year and with grown and growing children to boot, how have Anthony and Maricel stayed together in a world where staying married seems to have become the exception rather than the rule?
This episode dubbed as "Couple Goals" aired last July 25 at 7 PM, on The Philippine Star FB page.
S9 E4: Nothing Wrong With Taking Risks, Not Knowing Everything with Hans Montenegro
Now the managing director of Accenture, former actor Hans Montenegro shares his experiences navigating the corporate world.
Even with failure in the background, former actor turned human resources director Hans Montenegro believes that there is nothing wrong with leaving one’s comfort zone as doing so can even open up more career opportunities.
In an interview on “Breakthrough with Boris Joaquin” livestreamed on the Facebook pages of The Philippine STAR and CareerGuide on Thursday, May 4, Montenegro said that after all, people have full control of their career despite having a manager they report to and who would guide them.
In Montenegro’s case, his career was early on marked by several two-year stints mostly as a human resources executive. The first time he stayed for much long, based on his LinkedIn profile, was at Manulife where he worked for about seven years.
On this podcast, he explained this began in 2004, when a senior employee in a previous job told him that their human resources department should be more in tune with company business. Montenegro took this as a challenge, going out of his comfort zone, proceeding to learn more about the company’s business model at the time. Later on, he noted that this came from an innate desire for growth, aside from him being inspired to leave his comfort zone.
S9 E3: Celebrating Womanhood with Miriam Quiambao-Roberto
Breakthrough with Boris Joaquin celebrated International Women's Month last March 28. We interviewed 1999 Ms. Universe First Runner-Up, TV Host, Speaker, and Author, Miriam Quiambao-Roberto, in CELEBRATING WOMANHOOD live streamed on the Philippine Star. It's time to recognize the achievements that women have made, the roles that they have taken on, and reflect on the many struggles that they still face today – together, let's explore and appreciate the true essence of womanhood.
S9 E2: Positive Parenting with Katarina Rodriguez
Parenthood has become increasingly challenging these days with all the different problems confronting the modern society. People who choose to become parents, therefore, must be ready to meet the standard of care that all children deserve.
Beauty queen and new mother Katarina Rodriguez described “positive parenting” as the principle of “showing love to your child even when you’re trying to discipline them,” which is something she learned as one of the celebrity ambassadors for Save the Children Philippines (SCP).
The 2018 Miss World Philippines titleholder talked about her positive parenting advocacy and life as a mother during her appearance on the seventh episode of “Breakthrough with Boris Joaquin," which was streamed live on The Philippine STARand Career Guide official Facebook pages last Monday, Nov. 21.
S9 E1: Beyond Charity: The Act of Not Just Giving with Pauline Amelinckx
“It's one thing to just donate…but then would you really be able to appreciate the effects of your little act if you don’t go through it further? 2022 Miss Universe Philippines Charity Pauline Amelinckx said. The holiday season is here and for those who seem to have already gotten tired of traditional gift-giving, 2022 Miss Universe Philippines Charity Pauline Amelinckx and Save the Children-Philippines (SCP) shared an idea that could make this act of kindness even more meaningful.
Appearing in the latest episode of “Breakthrough with Boris Joaquin,” which was streamed live over The Philippine STAR and Career Guide Facebook pages last Dec. 6, Amelinckx talked about the concept of going “beyond charity” or getting people more actively involved in the process of helping others.
“It's one thing to just donate, for example, or give… Anyone would be able to do that at some point, but then would you really be able to appreciate the effects of your little act if you don’t go through it further, if you don’t see beyond what you offered or what you provided, for example?” she said. The recent discussion on this topic was a fitting celebration for the National Volunteers’ Month this December. Amelinckx and the Miss Universe Philippines organization have been working with Save the Children Philippines to raise awareness on its humanitarian missions that are made possible because of countless volunteers.
“Save the Children has really allowed for those avenues for us to be able to be more aware and for us to be able to also find our own ways of not just helping, or not just providing ways of help, but also be part of the process itself,” the Boholana beauty queen said.
S8 E10: Ready To Return Io School? Interview with Paolo S. Laurel
Classes for school year 2022 to 2023 will start in August for most schools and universities while basic education schools are required to implement full face-to-face (F2F) classes by November 2.
The Department of Education acknowledged that the return of wide-scale F2F classes would present “new stressors and challenges.” In the next episode of Breakthrough with Boris Joaquin, we’re going to discuss how ready the schools are and even students to return to campuses. How can we provide psychosocial support during the first month of the school year?
Our guest is Paolo Laurel, AVP for School Operation, Lyceum of the Philippines.
This episode originally live streamed on the Facebook pages of Philippine Star and CareerGuide.
S8 E9: Boris' Entrepreneurial Journey
We are featuring Boris’ interview with BrandStart. In this 3rd cut, Leonard Grape (host of BrandStart) interviews Boris to reveal his secret in leading a team, the early days of his entrepreneurial journey and what made him a successful freelance training consultant. This is the longest part of his interview with BrandStart but there are so many gems in this conversation so take note and enjoy!
S8 E8: Boris Defines Breakthrough Leadership
S8 E7: Building a Sustainable BRAND
We are featuring Boris’ interview with BrandStart. Here, he shares his expert insights on leadership, productivity, and his inspiring entrepreneurial journey. Listen to this episode to learn the three C’s in building a sustainable brand.
S8 E6: Adaptability Quotient
Whether you’re a business leader, educator or an individual, your secret weapon to build a foundation to thrive in the human age is to high grade your Adaptability Quotient (AQ).
AQ is the measure of how skilled you are in making intentional change in an environment that is evolving at speed. According to the Harvard Business Review, it is the new competitive advantage. Every time I raise the opportunity AQ provides with business leaders their faces light up. Leaders are searching for the 'how' to skill a workforce in a future of unknowns, how do they fast track the talent that will drive a future-focused culture with innovation at its core?
A quick search of Google and you will discover social scientists and psychologists sharing their perspectives on why developing AQ is considered even more critical than EQ (Emotional Intelligence Quotient) and IQ (Intelligence Quotient) in the current environment. Without AQ, EQ and IQ are like a two-legged stool, unstable, and likely to fall. In the near future, we will see AQ measures embedded and used as an indicator of future success in education and organisations.
S8 E5: Philippine Economic Outlook with NEDA Secretary Karl Chua
Last May 26, President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced new appointments to his economic team –Benjamin Diokno as Department of Finance secretary, Alfredo Pascual to the Department of Trade and Industry, and Manuel Bonoan to the Department of Public Works and Highways – emphasizing his incoming administration’s focus on steering the economy out of slump.
Marcos said the first priority of his administration would be the economy, “that’s why we have been very, very careful in choosing the economic team.
Earlier, Arsenio Balisacan was tapped to return to his old job as economic planning secretary and head of National Economic Development Authority.
“I know the economic team is critical and that is what people are looking [forward] to. I think we have found the best people for it who are able to look forward and to anticipate what the conditions will be for the Philippines [and] the rest of the world in the coming years.” Marcos said.
While local business groups are giving an early thumbs up to the appointees, what is certain is the gravity of economic challenges ahead, even in the wake of a better-than-expected first-quarter gross domestic product growth.
We have invited outgoing NEDA secretary Karl Kendrick Chua to discuss what should be the top of the agenda to keep the Philippines’ post-COVID economic recovery on track.
S8 E4: Breakthrough is Back!
In this transition episode, Boris just wanted his listeners to know that we apologize for being off air for the entire month of May. After the Philippine election, we had to recover from the anxieties and disappointments. We had to recalibrate. We are committed to our mission of producing breakthrough content whether on this podcast or thru our livestream show which will resume broadcasting next week.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
S8 E3: Carrying One's Cross
Carrying cross is a lesson in sacrifice. Sacrifice does not require us to follow a mountain of unattainable, impossible-to-followable laws. Neither does it ask us to go into monasteries deep into mountains to live a life of solitude. Sacrifice is not those outwardly behavior. One can live an ascetic life in a monastery for decades, and yet still be too proud of himself. In this episode, let's talk about the cross we carry.
S8 E2: How To Build Your Dream As An Entrepreneur with RJ Ledesma
During the live streamed episode of “Breakthrough with Boris Joaquin” last April 13, Wednesday, 7pm on the Facebook pages of The Philippine Star and Career Guide, you can get advice on how to build your dream while keeping your full-time job.
Boris Joaquin talks to Agora Awardee for Excellence in Entrepreneurship and accredited GoNegosyo Mentor for his work in Mercato Centrale, RJ Ledesma. Together, they will answer the questions: How do you become an effective entrepreneur given the time constraints that come with a day job? What mindsets do you need in self-employment?
S8 E1: Holy Week Special: Forgive And Be Forgiven
The first episode of Season 8 falls on Holy Week and my favorite reflection on the Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ is the first words of His last hour — forgiveness. Who do you need to forgive? What is the first name that comes to mind? Unforgiveness, resentment, and bitterness find their foothold quietly, secretly, sometimes even imperceptibly, in hearts. Pride and fear, two familiar enemies, flourish, and your relationship with God suffers, along with your relationships with others. Who do you need to forgive today so that God can forgive you?

S7 E10: The Impact of Oil Price Hikes on Filipinos and the Philippine Economy
During an episode of “Breakthrough with Boris Joaquin” streamed on the Facebook pages of The Philippine STAR and CareerGuide on Friday, March 25, Glenn Yu, Seaoil Philippines Inc. (SEAOIL) president, was asked what he could suggest to the government to address a possible oil crisis. For Glenn Yu, reducing dependence on foreign oil and the legislation of policies supporting electric vehicles would be the best way to help Filipinos as the Philippines continues to deal with increasing fuel prices.
S7 E9: What Keeps Me Going When the Road of Life Seems Hard
Today March 29, I turn 49. One more year and I’ll enter the golden age. This day makes me reflect about my life and everything that I have been through.
What keeps me going when the road of life seems difficult and hard? What fills my thoughts when I am are discouraged? As Christians, we have learned that those who delight in God’s word, in God’s truth, and meditate on it, will find refreshment and nourishment for the long haul.
As I turn almost half a century old, I pray that I will always endeavor to turn my thoughts toward Him and His blessings because those who look to Him find life and strength to keep going.
May God shield my thoughts from discouragement and the temptation to abandon His path and turn to worldly ways of power and control. God has called me to lead, teach and serve others, following Jesus’ example, even when it is hard.
I want to be found walking in God’s way everyday.
S7 E8: Qualities of Servant Leaders. An Interview with former Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno Part 2
“There is no lesser evil for us, only the best servant leader for us. At ayaw na namin ng stereotyping, ayaw na namin ng fake news, ang gusto namin [ay] honest to goodness servant leaders, (We do not want stereotyping, we do not want fake news, what we want is honest to goodness servant leaders),” she stressed. Sereno advised the public to discern carefully the next set of leaders they will vote for by looking at their track record and must not simply be fooled by marketing strategies.
S7 E7: Our Standard for Choosing National Leaders: Interview with former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno
Former chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno urged Filipinos to speak their minds and push back against what they think is not right so that servant leaders, and not the self-serving ones, would be elected this coming May. During an interview over “Breakthrough with Boris Joaquin,” livestreamed on the Facebook pages of The Philippine STAR and Career Guide last May 9, Sereno said Filipinos should elect a “servant leader, nothing less” in the upcoming May elections, and that the public should fight against fake news and being stereotyped for preferring a particular candidate.
Listen and learn from the former top magistrate about how the Bible and the Philippine constitution define servant leadership and mandate us to choose only servant leaders. This part one of the whole episode.
S7 E6: The Leader We Need: Servant Leaders
The national elections are just around the corner. Proclamation rallies and sorties are happening left and right with the candidates’ political maneuvers. Looking at where our country has been requires us to be discerning.
One of the most influential leadership experts of our time is Ken Blanchard. He co-founded a movement called Lead Like Jesus, where I serve as regional representative for Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand. When we first ran Lead Like Jesus in the Philippines, I honestly thought it would not work because of its spiritual underpinnings. But more and more companies are coming to realize that the nature and quality of one’s leadership is not just a matter of experience, education or people skills, but is essentially character-based, founded on such values as stewardship, responsibility, and accountability. It has almost been two decades, and we’re still running the program in the corporate world.
All those years of teaching servant leadership have challenged my standards as I think about my own personal leadership, about how to develop other organizational leaders, and about my own choices for our next set of national leaders.
In electing the next leaders of our nation, it is crucial to ask, “Are you choosing servant leaders or self-serving leaders?” In this episode, let me share with you some pointers on what a servant leader is like.
S7 E5: The Leader We Need: Ukrainian President Zelensky
When was elected President of Ukraine in 2019, a lot of people thought it was a joke. Zelensky was an actor and comedian with no political experience. He had come to national prominence as the producer and star of hit satirical television series Servant of the People, playing an ordinary high school teacher who accidentally becomes Ukrainian president after a video of him condemning government corruption goes viral. Zelensky also set up his grassroots party called Servant of the People. Despite his landslide election win, his critics still see him as a political punchline.
But no one’s laughing now.
S7 E4: Hybrid Work Is Here To Stay with Janet Webster Part 2
“We don’t just look at the job, we don’t just say ‘That job can work a hundred percent from home, that job can’t.’ We [should] actually look at the people doing the job at least as much as the job itself and their well-being,” she explained. Employees should also adopt new skills when it comes to the new normal set up of working, such as technology skills, Webster pointed out.
“Whatever age we are... I don’t believe in the saying you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. We need to get onboard with connectivity, and be able to use the technology to collaborate,” she said, adding that people need to put in “extra effort” when it comes to collaboration with employees and managers.
“We need both employers and employees to strike this medium... we need to strike this happy medium so that we don’t insist on one thing all the time, because we need to compromise. We need flexibility and we need some consistency as well,” she stressed.
S7 E3: Hybrid Work Is Here To Stay with Janet Webster Part 1
Is it possible for the hybrid work arrangement to become a standard practice even after the COVID-19 pandemic?
For Investors in People in the Philippines chairperson Janet Webster, it does, saying that many companies that were reluctant to implement it at first are now open to continuing it. This is part 1 of the interview with Janet Webster during the pilot episode of “Breakthrough With Boris Joaquin” on Wednesday, Feb. 9, livestreamed on the Facebook pages of The Philippine STAR and Career Guide.
Based on a study conducted by Investors in People in the Philippines, 91.7 percent of people surveyed believe hybrid working will benefit their respective organizations in the long term, while 8.2 percent said otherwise. Meanwhile, 37.5 percent of respondents said their productivity improved during the hybrid setup during the pandemic, and 50 percent answered that their productivity remained the same as pre-pandemic levels. The remaining 12.5 percent stated that their productivity in the hybrid work setup slowed down.
Janet said, “I think we’re on the brink of hybrid working now…So I think we’ve got an opportunity. People can see a hundred percent in the office [set-up] work, a hundred percent work-from-home work, why can’t we merge the two and make something even better?”
S7 E2: Why Leni will Win
This is a special episode. And normally special episodes interrupt the sequence of our planned episode to discuss a current or political event. In light of recent events, particularly the latest Pulse Asia survey for presidential race that shows vice president Leni Robredo at far second. We invited again AR Angcos, we had him during the discussion on PNoy's Legacy and VP Leni's Fight Chance, to share his analysis on VP Leni's winning chance.
VP Leni's numbers were worst in 2016 and yet she won. Let's see history repeat itself. I like how Solita Monsod said in it her opinion column last year as she predicted that VP Leni will win, "I see hundreds of thousands of volunteers either just waiting to be asked or doing things on their own, contributing of their time, talents, and treasure to see the candidate of their choice win, at the ground level. They are going head to head against the moneyed political dynastic class and the big business that supports them (for a quid pro quo)… I see that this is happening, with great spontaneity, only in Leni’s case. And that is why she will win. The other candidates, with their questionable values and financing, don’t stand a chance against her."
S7 E1: Is Hybrid Work Working?
Hybrid working is becoming the norm. By April 2021, several Philippine firms have been transitioning to some kind of hybrid arrangement which includes a combination of days when employees work from home and days when they have to report to the office. This is the central model, especially for companies with knowledge workers. Most HR practitioners I know personally are in favor of such arrangement.
But how is it working so far? How are the teams doing in terms of output and productivity? How is it affecting company culture?

Getting COVID and being isolated for 15 days taught me the valuable lesson of community. People responded to my family's needs like we're next door neighbors in a small village. Especially during disruptive times, it's very important to appreciate your community, whether its the church, your workplace or circle of friends and learn how to navigate through change with them. In this podcast episode aside from giving you an update where we are, let me share 4 points in staying connected in the midst of change.
S6 E8: UPDATE on our COVID situation!
First of all, let me express my sincerest gratitude to all my online friends and subscribers who reached out and even helped out. Thank you very much. We appreciate your help and concern. But most especially we appreciate your prayers. This is a short episode because I want to give you another update within the week, so episode 9 will be released earlier than the usual weekly Tuesdays. So until then...
S6 E7: We Got COVID too!
We never thought we'll get it. We were very careful as a family. We practically just stay at home all the time. But perhaps during the holidays or because Omicron is just an easily transferrable variant of the virus. Our two daughters were the ones who are positive. And you know as parents, it's really hard to see you children to be the ones at risk. Let me share with you briefly what are going through right now. The early days of our quarantine and self isolation. We appreciate your prayers. And we trust that God will heal and protect us from this.
S6 E6: Finding Balance this 2022
We live in a productivity-driven society where trying to balance work and family life is one of the most common sources of stress for any working adult. Often, people are unable to find a point of balance between their businesses or careers and their families - and one is given more priority than the other. This leads to a number of dysfunctional outcomes: mainly strained familial relationships, and eventually, inefficiency at work, as well as poor physical and mental health.
The start of the new year is an opportunity for a new beginning - to gain new perspective on this balancing act, and to think through how to adequately fulfill your roles both at home and at the workplace. Allow me to give you three crucial steps to ignite that new beginning in your life.
S6 E5: Finding Purpose, Post Pandemic
At the start of the new year, take this opportune time to find clarity. What are you living for? Here are some practical steps to get you started in discovering your purpose and forming your purpose statement.
Globally, this pandemic has turned our world upside down – disrupting our lives physically, socially, mentally, and financially. These have been trying times for everyone – none excluded. Hope has become a challenge, especially when you feel helpless, as if there is nothing you can do. Let me share what has gotten me through these trying times – that is, finding purpose.
S6 E4: Genius of Generosity
During the holiday season, invitations to practice generosity are plentiful. Christmas reminds us of the many ways we can open our hearts through the act of giving. They also offer us a moment to reflect on the practice of generosity. Learn how you can deepen your experience of generosity by moving from acts of giving to cultivating an attitude of generosity.
S6 E3: Online shopping and Workplace Training with Bryl Zenarosa
We talked about the online shopping phenomena in the country and eventually his work as a learning practitioner. He has conducted "Successfully Managing a Remote Team" virtual workshop for us this 2021 and he shared the new programs he'll be running for us this 2022.
S6 E2: Spreading Acts of Kindness, Naida Pasion
In this episode, listen to Naida talk about her passion to see donors and the acts of giving move from being transactional to being a transformational journey since generosity benefits the donor as much as the beneficiary. "Kindness is contagious" she says. This December, Save the Children would like to invite you to their Save the Children from Hunger campaign. You can do so by donating at this link bit.ly/QRforHunger.
We also challenge you to form Kindness Circles and challenge your friends to help in this campaign as well. Gather 10 of your friends or turn your Christmas party into an act of kindness and find out how your generosity is changing the lives of children most impacted by inequality and discrimination. Let kindness unfold again this holiday season and beyond, by helping to #SavetheChildrenFromHunger!
S6 E1: Voice for the Voiceless, Jason Tash
As part of the children's month celebration, we invited Jason Tash, Chief Development Officer of Destiny Rescue. Destiny Rescue is an internationally recognized Christian non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing children enslaved in the sex trafficking industry. In two decades, they have literally saved thousands of children from brothels, red light districts and abusive situations and brought them to their Paths to Freedom where they can be cared for and looked after in a safe, Christ-loving environment.
Jason is committed to being a voice for the sexually exploited, vulnerable and poor who, in most cases, can’t speak up for themselves. He motivates donors and influencers to get involved and make a difference in the lives of the voiceless.
